Gordon Greenidge made his Test debut against India in Bangalore in 1972. In an illustrious career, he racked up 7,558 runs in 108 games with 19 hundreds and 34 fifties.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GORDON GREENIDGE: With equal measures of swagger and skill, Gordon Greenidge revolutionized the open batting in cricket. At a time when seeing the new ball and defending were seen as the mainstays of starting innings, Greenidge with his stroke play changed the nature of the job. He was born on May 1, 1951 in St. Peter’s Parish in Barbados. He played a huge role in the West Indies as a global force that dominated cricket for almost two decades.

There was style and there was substance – this cocktail sent shivers down the spine of nearly every bowling unit across the world. In 523 first-class games, he scored 37,354 including 92 cents and 183 fifty.

  1. 100 v Pakistan (1977)
    Pakistan were on a tour of the West Indies in 1977 where they collided with an in-form Greenidge. He scored 536 points in five Tests and was instrumental in his team’s 2-1 series win. In the final test in Jamaica, he scored a special ton in the opening innings as the West Indies won the game by 140 runs.
  2. 107 v India (1974)
    He showed his mettle in the first match against India where he scored 93 in the first set and then followed that up with an even better 107 in the second set. The West Indies won the game by 267 points.
  3. 134 v England (1976)
    Greenidge loved beating fast bowling during the West Indies tour of England in 1976. In the first set, West Indies could only go 211 despite a brilliant 134 by the first player. He then scored 101 runs in the second inning.
  4. 214* v England (1984)
    England were on the receiving end of another Greenidge masterclass. After being fired for 1 in the first innings, he came back with a superb double cent in the second innings and played an important role in the West Indies as they secured a nine-wicket victory.
  5. 226 v Australia (1991)
    Perhaps his best shot came in the penultimate Test match against Australia in Barbados. He notched an epic 226 in the second set and Australia was knocked out of the game. West Indies won the match by nine wickets.
