Tim David produced three straight sixes to guide his side to a record pursuit at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

With 17 points needed for the Indian Premier League (IPL) final against Rajasthan Royals last night, the Mumbai Indians needed a miracle to clinch their fourth victory of the season. The thrilling final contest finally ended with three balls to spare, thanks to Tim David’s mighty stick. The Aussie slugger produced three straight sixes to guide his side to a record pursuit at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

David’s exploits not only relieved Mumbai fans but also delighted Sachin Tendulkar. The Master Blaster was simply euphoric after David smashed a formidable 84m six on the second delivery of the 20th overhand. David hit Jason Holder’s full throw in the middle of the wicket and after the shot Sachin was all smiles. In the video, the legendary cricketer is seen smiling. “Tim David, bow down. What a way to leave Wankhede and Sachin Tendulkar all smiles,” the tweet read.

Cricket fans couldn’t have asked for a better spectacle than this in the 1000th match in IPL history yesterday. Chasing a goal of 213, Mumbai lost skipper Rohit Sharma for three runs in the second leg of the heats. Suryakumar Yadav produced a crucial 55 shot to weather the storm. But it was Tim David’s flurry that ultimately made the difference. David hit two bounds and five sixes to go undefeated on 45-for-14 balls.

Earlier lead off Rajasthan recorded a mammoth tally of 212. Open hitter Yashasvi Jaiswal played a sensational shot to elevate his first IPL century against Mumbai. Jaiswal slammed 16 bounds and eight sixes to hit a blistering inning of 62 124s. Jaiswal also became the fourth youngest player to clear a century in IPL history.

Mumbai, thanks to their emphatic victory over Rajasthan, has scripted the highest ever chase at Wankhede Stadium and the second highest overall in the IPL.

The six-wicket win helped Mumbai secure their fourth win of the season. The five-time IPL champions, with eight points to their name, now sit seventh in the points table.
