Cheteshwar Pujara continued his impressive display in county cricket as he marked his second century of the county season for Sussex. Pujara, who skipped the IPL 2023 mini-auction, has extended his association with Sussex after an incredible debut season for them last year. The Indian Test specialist leads the Sussex side this season and he played a sensational captaincy move on Saturday to help his side post a formidable tally against Gloucestershire.

Pujara scored 151 runs on 238 balls which were laced with 20 fours and two sixes as Sussex declared their innings on 455/5. He shared a 100-run stand for the third wicket alongside Tom Alsop. The Sussex skipper didn’t stop there and shared a few stands with James Coles – 144 for the fourth wicket, 106 for the fifth wicket alongside Oliver Carter.

Marchant de Lange and Zafar Gohar shared two wickets each for Gloucestershire.

Pujara led his troops well on the pitch on Day 3 as the Sussexes got the better of Gloucestershire limiting them to 198/8 at the stumps. Nathan McAndrew claimed a fife for Sussex.

Meanwhile, it was the second century for Pujara this county season in three matches so far. The talismanic hitter scored 115 runs against Durham in his first county game of the season.

Pujara, who joined Sussex last year, made a huge impact scoring 1,094 County Championship runs including a record three double centuries and finished the season averaging 109.4. He captained Sussex on several occasions as caretaker captain as Tom Haines got injured.

“Definitely (playing for Sussex rejuvenated my career). If you look at last season I was out of the Indian team. I needed a few runs to get back into the team. I have the right platform. form here. Scored some points and came back to the team. So there is nothing like playing for the Indian team but Sussex gave me this opportunity and I will never forget it” , Pujara could be heard saying in the video.

The current county season is very crucial for Pujara ahead of the World Test Championship which will be played under English conditions at the London Oval.
